Sketching for Watercolorists

Supplies:

• A sketchbook - I suggest a mixed media book or an inexpensive watercolor sketchbook. Not smaller than 5 1/2 x 8 inches or so and not larger than 9 x 12 inches. A rigid cover would be better than a soft cover on the sketchbook.

• A graphite pencil. HB to 6B range. a 2,3 or 4B is probably the most all around useful.

• A waterproof pen such as a micron or a faber castell pitt pen. Black or Sepia.

• Watercolors- a small kit is more desirable than a wheelie cart full of supplies.

• Waterbrush - I suggest a Pentel Aquash or Vista medium to large, round waterbrush. (Art Outfitters).

• A rag or some paper towels to wipe off their waterbrush with.

• Water soluble colored pencil - 1 to 3 colors that work well together ( a dark triad is good). I suggest a Derwent Inktense Dark Indigo or a Faber Castell Dark Indigo for a single color. However any dark color that pleases them will do. There are several 2-color combinations that I will demonstrate. The 2 combinations that I use the most are Derwent Inkense dark indigo/madder brown and Inktense Sepia ink/Charcoal. (art outfitters) Derwent Inktense dark indigo, madder brown and tan make a pleasing triad.
