Expressive Watercolor Painting with Alicia Farris


Alicia Farris will share her studies of the human face and figure in this 4-day watercolor workshop. Using Alicia’s characteristic loose and colorful style, students will learn techniques to portray not just a likeness, more importantly, the personality and emotion of the human subject. Students will benefit from demonstrations as well as discussion, individual and group critique.

The class is intended for the painter who has at least a basic command of the watercolor medium; portrait painting is not a prerequisite. Sample photos of what Alicia will demonstrate during class will be supplied to registered students along with a materials list. Students will have the opportunity to work from supplied photos or work from their own subject matter if they wish.

As a bonus, Alicia will spend time the last day demonstrating and discussing watercolor on Yupo paper, a tree-friendly, 100% re-workable surface on which she has painted some of her most recognized works. Alicia will supply a sampling of Yupo paper and various tools with which students can experiment.



 

Supplies


Paper
2-3 pieces of 300lb or 140lb Arches or Fabriano Artistico– 22” x 30” hot press paper (I’ll demo on 11”
x 15” quarter sheets or half sheets)
Pad of “cheap” practice paper for testing color mixes
You may substitute stretched cold press 140lb paper for hot press, but I will be working on hot press
paper, as it works much better with this technique.
Alicia will bring a sampling of Yupo paper. Feel free to bring additional Yupo paper if you have it and
wish to have extra.

Paint
No worries if you don’t have these exact colors or would like to use your own colors. I will be using some or all of the
following colors, most of which are transparent:
Alizarin Crimson
Scarlett Lake (W and N)
Quinacridone Rose Deep (American Journey)
Yellow Ochre
Raw Sienna (Winsor Newton)
Burnt Sienna (Winsor Newton)
Indanthrone Blue (Qor, Daniel Smith or American Journey)
Ultramarine Blue
Peacock Blue (American Journey or Holbein)
Cobalt Turquoise (Da Vinci or Holbein) or Cobalt Turquise Light (Winsor Newton)
Hookers Green
Mineral Violet (American Journey or Holbein)

Watercolor brushes
Any brushes that you like that come to a nice point. I use Silver Black Velvet brushes from Silver Ltd. Company. I
recommend a #6 or #8 round, and a #12, #14 or #16 round . You’ll start with and use the larger size throughout
most of the painting. You might also wish to bring a slightly stiffer, small flat brush for lifting. (no scrubber brushes)
For Yupo, I recommend a couple of soft, flat watercolor brushes, 1/2-1 inch wide work nicely.

Misc.
Table easel , preferably adjustable
palette with large mixing area. Can be a white plastic plate -not Styrofoam or paper
box of tissues
Paper towels or (I prefer) an old towel
large cup or plastic container for water. Divided food storage containers work great.
Clips and board or ½ inch foam core board for painting surface
Masking tape if you are using 140 lb paper
Pencil and sketchbook
gum or white eraser
photos for subject matter **

**You will receive the photos for demo paintings As you will be freer with color and more relaxed painting someone
unfamiliar, I prefer that you start with one of the supplied subjects or one of your own of someone you don’t know.
Day 1 will be elements of faces and a value study. Please come to class with at least one face drawn and ready to
paint. The latter part of day two or beginning of day 3, we’ll start on the figures.

Please plan your drawing with composition in mind so that the image takes up the majority of the page. (when
doing a face, it will be approx.. life size or a bit larger) Make sure that your pencil lines will be visible through several
layers of watercolor. If choosing your own photo, look for good shadow and light shapes and please use a color
photo, although you may also wish to print it in black and white for reference. You’ll want to print at least a 6” x 8” -
8”x 10” from which to work OR work from your image downloaded to a tablet.
