twenty-six times thus far. Between 1996 and 2024, he was awarded the bronze, silver, and gold awards. He acknowledges Bill Lewis, Ken Oberste, Gary Simmons, and Ron Kincaid, former and current MSW members, as important influences to him both artistically and personally. Richard continues to serve as a great ambassador for the group.
Richard has been drawing since childhood and believes, “The better you draw, the better you will paint.” He credits value, contrast, and a good design as the most important elements for a successful painting—even more than color, shape, or texture. Richard says that “Great brushwork, brilliant use of color, or an interesting subject will not make up for a poor design.”
Over the years, Richard’s watercolor style has evolved into a looser and more spontaneous approach to the medium. Richard says of his work, “My goal is to interpret, not render. I want to engage the viewer, entertain him, and share my vision.”
Named as one of 10 “artists to watch” in Watercolor Magic’s 2005 magazine, Richard has also been featured or included in a variety of other notable watercolor publications.
Richard says, “I love to teach, and through teaching, more than any other endeavor, I continue to learn.” He shares his knowledge with others, providing watercolor instruction around the country. Richard has participated in several MSW Paint-Ins, both as a student and a teacher, and our group looks forward to learning more from Richard in the future.
